Since being selected on April 11 to compete for the title of Miss Trinidad and Tobago World, the 15 delegates have been very busy. Hectic training schedules and gym regimens have kept them out of the spotlight. But, in spite of these time constraints all 15 young women, accompanied by reigning Miss Trinidad and Tobago World Ashanna Arthur, have found the time to give back by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Trinidad and Tobago.

One Sunday morning last month the delegates were transported to Coconut Drive, Morvant, where they spent the entire day lifting bricks, mixing cement, bending steel, hammering and moving gravel.
As part of the Miss World competition, any representative is expected to be part of a “Beauty with a Purpose” project in her respective country, island or nation.

National pageant director for T&T, fashion designer Michael Raghunanan, felt it was important for all the delegates and not just the eventual winner to be part of this community service project, seeing the experience as one that would build character and inculcate a greater sense of responsibility in all the delegates.

Habitat for Humanity T&T declared May as “Women Build Month” and all of the delegates (some accompanied by female family members and friends) were eager to be part of the movement. They all committed to do a fund-raising fashion show last Sunday, June 6, at The Ambassador Hotel in Port-of-Spain, to raise much needed funds for the Trinidad chapter of this global nonprofit organisation.

In addition to the work the women have done with Habitat for Humanity, they have launched a food drive to collect canned items for distribution to orphan homes and needy families nationwide, and particularly in their respective communities. According to Raghunanan, the delegates have all embraced their roles as goodwill ambassadors and are eager to give back in every way possible (they have all shown an interest in helping complete the home which is being built for a family of four desperately in need of a good shelter).

The 15 delegates are encouraging companies, families, groups and individuals to support habitat for Humanity and to support the Miss Trinidad and Tobago World Food Drive by donating canned food items for distribution. Raghunanan has also indicated that patrons attending the gala crowning in July would also be asked to walk with five-ten items to the venue on the night of the show.
